Just a Pretty Face...
After reading the reviews of this game and then subsequently playing it, I was rather shocked. Dont get me wrong; this game is very well polished. The mechanics are smooth. The graphics are great. I very much wanted to like this game, but its just too boring.
The game is one level. Though it expands depending on how far you get, it never changes. You have to work disproportionately hard to earn the power-ups than the amount of good they do you once youve gotten them. The soundtrack is one chord-progression, played on a ukelele, looped across the entire game. The drawings are astoundingly good, but the novelty of them wears off after about 5 minutes. Your gameplay experiance will still be the same after an hour of playing.
This game plays like a free flash game. It doesnt have much depth to it at all. It doesnt bring anything new to the table of a sidescrolling coin-collector.
Just to be fair, heres what it wouldve taken for me to give this game 5 stars:
-Extensive soundtrack
-Graphics across many themes (not just the hand-drawn ones that dont serve a purpose)
-New character mechanics (such as a "shoot" mechanic or whatnot)
-A plot (preferably one that will motivate me to keep playing)
-More unlockables (preferably ones that change the state of the game rather than simply give me a meagar advantage)
-Levels that expand across the Y-axis, rather than just the X-axis
etc…
Again, this game is really good at what it does. My problem with it is that it doesnt do enough.
